SKIATHOS TOWN
The capital town of Skiathos is a throbbing, picturesque settlement, the largest of the island, with excellent facilities and a vibrant nightlife. Strolling around the town’s paved streets, you will stumble upon many nice restaurants, taverns, shops, and bars.
One of the town’s most important landmarks is its natural harbor, which is today a yacht and sailing boat haven that adds a cosmopolitan flair to the island. You will find there perfect opportunities for nearby excursions, as there are boats that can take you to famous beaches, Tsougria islet, as well as Skopelos and Alonissos islands.
At the harbor, you can enjoy a relaxing promenade and then unwind with a glass of wine or a cocktail at one of the bars on the waterfront, overlooking a small, verdant peninsula with a Venetian Fortress adorning it, known as Bourtzi Fortress. The fortress was established in 1207 by the Gizi brothers, and today it is one of the most romantic spots on Skiathos, thanks to its pine-clad surroundings and a stunning viewpoint to the archipelago, especially during the sunset.
Apart from Bourtzi, you should also visit another important site of Skiathos Town, the former house of the famous Greek author and poet Alexandros Papadiamantis, who was born on the island. The author’s father built the Papadiamantis family house in 1860, which was later on converted to a museum where one may see, among other things, Papadiamantis’ books and personal objects.
